New Saturday Competition Timesheets

Attention Members,

Due to increasing demand for competition tee times, starting this Saturday the timesheets for Saturday Competitions will be changing slightly. The first tee time  will generally allow earlier starts and follow the seasons – Summer, Spring/Autumn and Winter.

The main focus is to allow more entrants into our competitions and to ensure our competitions (especially during winter) can finish before sunset. Using the changing sunrise times, the timesheet will now have an earlier competition starting time (6.00am) during the Summer period, a slightly later starting time (6.20am) during the Spring/Autumn times of the year, and then a later start (6.40am) during the winter months where the sun rises late and daylight hours are reduced.

The new timesheet format will come into effect as of March 2012.

If you would like any more information on this, please contact Scott Mayes (Club Captain) or see the Admin Staff in the Clubhouse office.

Bunker Rake Positions – A New Policy

A common question at golf courses is where to place the bunker rakes after use.  Previously at Mt Coolum, we preferred bunker rakes to be placed in the bunker – away from the edges.

But after many years of trying to educate golfers, we are still getting many complaints of unfair lies in bunkers due to incorrect rake placement. 3 recent course inspections (on Member Competition Days after the Course Staff had properly prepared the bunkers) showed more than 90% of rakes were being incorrectly and inconsiderately replaced after use! This means Members are doing the wrong thing and we can’t blame visiting golfers.

Typical Example of INCORRECTLY placed rake - ball held up near front/back face.

As of Friday 2nd December, in line with the recommendations of Golf Australia, all rakes will NOW be placed OUTSIDE bunkers on the PAINTED ‘T’ provided.

White lines showing COMPULSORY entry/exit point to bunker and T rake position.

Members can help too! If any player notices a rake NOT on the T, they are encouraged to move the rake to the correct position. It is believed that this will cause the least interference to play and allow the best chance of normal ball advancement.

Return bunker rake after use - PLACE ON THE T.

Placement outside the bunkers also gives the bunkers a cleaner look than inside the bunkers or half in/half out

FOOTNOTE   -    WELL DONE MEMBERS!!

After a full day’s competition play on Saturday – only 3 rakes were placed on the slope inside a bunker!

It seems that this new policy works well for most people.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK – AND REMEMBER – IF YOU SEE A RAKE IN THE WRONG PLACE, PUT IT BACK ON THE T!

Mt Coolum Golf Club Juniors

The Invincibles Tour, a local group headed by Graham Miller, that promotes Junior Golf on the coast and surrounding areas had their 2011 Presentation Night at the Hyatt on the 21st November.

Several juniors who are members of Mt Coolum fared very well. Shae Wools- Cobb and Wade Stockill, whom we share with Horton Park, were prominent but 3 of our younger members were stars.

Zac Quirk, who has been a strong performer for sometime, has been selected into the Zone Development Squad.

Lochie Coleborn, won best Junior Golfer for November 2011 and has been selected into the Zone Development Squad.

The outstanding performer is Jared Barr, who only graduated from the Cadets this year, won the C Grade Best individual Performance, Best Nett Player of the year and Gold Cup of Cups winner. Sadly for us, Jared will be moving away from the area for a couple of years but will return to continue his golf at Mt Coolum.

All these wonderful young golfers have done very well in golf but have also represented this club in an extraordinary manner and they are the product of great parents and support from the Mt Coolum Cadet and Junior programmes.

If only we had a practice fairway.

17th - 14 Nov - Bunker Sand 2

17th Fairway Update

A portion of the second part of the 17th fairway (past the cross road) has been rotary hoed ready for seeding. Unfortunately, this may cause some temporary anxiety for some players, but at the conclusion of the project, the better grass and better drainage will appeal to everyone.

ANY BALL COMING TO REST WITHIN G.U.R. MUST PROCEED IN ACCORDANCE WITH RULE 25-1.

IF RELIEF NO NEARER THE HOLE IS NOT POSSIBLE, PLAYERS MUST DROP IN THE DROP ZONE LOCATED NEAR THE 100m POST.

TEMPORARY LOCAL RULE:

ANY BALL COMING TO REST WITHIN THE LATERAL WATER HAZARD MAY TAKE RELIEF USING THE DROP ZONE WITH A ONE SHOT PENALTY.

17th Fairway Project

As of Monday 10th October, the 17th fairway will be closed so that regrading and drainage works can take place. For the next couple of months, the 17th will be played as a Par 3 from a temporary tee near the cross road. Players MUST proceed West from the 16th green along the designated path near the boundary fence to the temporary tee (see sketch).

While playing the 16th – if the ball comes to rest inside the work zone (or the work zone boundary stakes or ribbon affects the players stance or swing), players MUST take a COMPULSORY DROP outside the work zone at the nearest point of relief and no closer to the hole – without penalty.

If a player wishes to recover their ball from inside the work zone, the may only enter if SAFE to do so.

The goals of the 17th Fairway Project are to:

  • Improve the safety of neighbouring properties by moving the “line of play” further right.
  • Improve drainage issues by regrading surface levels.
  • Remove existing blue couch and carpet grass and stolonise fairway/rough with Greenlees Park.
  • Encourage longer hitting players to play short of the new fairway bunkers (also improves safety).
  • Remove trees that significantly affect fairway/rough turf health.
  • Plant replacement trees/shrubs/grasses in left rough and O.O.B. to improve landscaped buffer to neighbours.

Sketch – 17TH FAIRWAY PROJECT

Monday (Day 1) – 22 tonne excavator removed RHS mounds and begins regrading fairway. Excavated soil is used for subtle mounding and to improve fairway slopes to aid drainage.

Tuesday (Day 2) – excavator regraded fairway near pond and loaded soil into truck for improving fairway drainage slopes. Pond silt and sediment also cleaned out – approximately 400 golf balls found in the muck!!

Wednesday (Day 3) – rough shaping of swale drains and associated mounding along left side of fairway completed. Primary crossing swale drain cleaned and grade increased. Reinstated path from 16th green to temporary tee.
